Bay Area Baroque Dance Workshop

Portola Valley, California

Sunday, May 5, 2024

Session 1: Technique, all levels, beginners/improvers welcome, 1pm – 3:30pm
Session 2: Repertoire, not suitable for beginners, 4pm – 6:30pm

Workshop Content

Session 1: Baroque dance technique and style. This session will focus on step sequences in a variety of rhythms including partnering, spatial patterns, and the basic principles of the use of the arms. Participants with little experience will focus on steps which form the basis for more complex variations. More experienced participants will also work on more complex steps, as well as the use of arms, head and different musical interpretations which serve to enhance the performance of dances in the Baroque style.

Session 2: This workshop will focus on a dance or extract, either extant or one choreographed, in the Baroque style, by Philippa Waite. The emphasis will be on the movement quality required for the style, technique and performance of the steps within the dance, not on the memorising of sequences. Dance(s) chosen will depend on number of participants. This workshop requires some Baroque dance experience and isn’t suitable for beginners.

General Information

The workshops will be suitable for dancers, musicians, and those with an interest in the theater, opera, ballet or social dancing of the late 17th & early 18th centuries.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes (not excessively tight) and, if possible, flexible shoes. Dance shoes are not required, but if you own a selection, a flat pair or a pair with small heels is preferable to a pair with high heels (jazz shoes rather than character shoes, and no ladies' high heel ballroom dance shoes).

Fees

One session: $50 (low income $35)
Both sessions: $85 (low income $55)
